HAA Virtual Speakers Bureau – Caroline Light speaking on “Stand Your Ground: a Feminist History of Self-Defense”

Dear Fellow Alumnae/i:

Join us for the first-ever Harvard Alumni Association Virtual Speakers Bureau event on Friday, May 20 at 00:30 am CET/Italian time (Thursday, May 19th at 6:30 pm EST). Connect with fellow alumnae/i around the world and have the chance to hear from Professor Caroline Light, lecturer on Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality and Director of Undergraduate Studies , on her recent research and scholarship.

Professor Light will be speaking on "Stand Your Ground: a Feminist History of Self-Defense." In her talk, she will unpack contemporary associations of lethal self-defense with good or "law-abiding" citizenship and she will explore the intersection of gender and race in the American Armed Citizen ideal to better understand how contemporary "Stand Your Ground" laws (and culture) affect women and people of color. Professor Light's newest book, Stand Your Ground: America's Love Affair with Deadly Self-Defense, will be published in 2017.

Following her remarks, she will take questions from the virtual audience. The webinar will last 1.5 hours. In advance of the Harvard Women's Weekend this fall, you can enjoy this webinar from the comfort of your own home or with a group of alums.

Long Live Veritas !
